“Stay together children, we don’t want to lose anyone”

There was no danger of that happening, the six small children hang on to one another as tightly as possible.

It has been a difficult journey. Seated in the first wagon behind the locomotive for the entire trip, they now reek of smoke, their little faces stained with soot.

The woman expertly steers them through the crowded lobby and into the street.

Martha watches from behind her jewelery counter as they pass through. She has seen them many times in the thirty years she has worked here.

The six orphans and their escort who suffocated to death in car number one, February 1943.
