Letter To Home

9 May

He’s writing a letter. He wants her to know that he’s sorry. Sorry for leaving. Sorry for not being there to help with the twins. Sorry for everything.

He needs to tell her how much he misses the smell of her fresh-washed hair and the curve of her back. The way she snores and the sound of her laughter.

What he won’t tell her is how he felt the first time one of his bullets hit its target. How he shot a boy barely the age of his kid brother. The army trained him to kill but they never prepared him for the harsh reality of what he must do.

He woke that night to the sound of crying only to discover that his cheeks and shirt were wet with tears.

He hates this place. It reeks of sweat and fear, of blood and death. He wants to go home.

No, he will never tell her any of this, for tomorrow an American bullet will end his life and another soldier will weep in the night.

It’s unfortunate that this is a too-often occurrence. Powerful writing.
