Home to the world-famous “carnival” held each year just before lent.( Mardi Gras ) One of the main purposes of this festival is to showcase the many samba schools. They compete in different categories including best float, music, dance, and costumes.

Very popular with  designers are headdresses and shoulder adornments made from dyed feathers. Some of these pieces can weigh as much as 100 kilograms ( 220 lbs ).
